Move In/Out Cleaning Checklist

Moving in or out of a rental unit in Ontario can be stressful — especially when it comes to cleaning. Many deposit disputes happen because the unit isn’t left in the right condition. Understanding your responsibilities under Ontario’s Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) can save you money and headaches.

Legal Expectations in Ontario

According to the RTA, tenants must maintain “ordinary cleanliness” during the tenancy and return the unit in a similar condition as when they moved in, minus normal wear and tear.
Landlords cannot force you to hire a professional cleaner, but they can expect the unit to be clean enough for the next tenant (often described as “broom-swept condition”). Failing to meet this standard can result in deposit deductions or claims at the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB).
